We might be teaching a famous Christian musician?
Hello everyone!
This week felt really fast. Probably because it was really good.I got a bluetooth keyboard so I can write faster, but that doesn't mean I know what to write or how to write it well, haha..
Last p day we went to the George Washington Masonic Memorial Building which is a long name for "cool tall old building." I have a bunch of sweet pictures. Sister Harrison and I have started to find our way around our area, Virginia roads are way more confusing than Utah. I really love it here though.
We started talking to this guy who was a bible request referral and he seems really worried that if he goes to church people will recognize him because it sounds like he's in a famous Christian music band? Or he thinks he's famous? He plays the bass, and he told us he felt like he got kicked out of his church because he was told he was 'too good of a musician for church'? It's kind of funny but he is so concerned. We haven't told him that we pretty much have our own music for our church and so nobody would probably recognize him... He was excited when we told him he could just join on Zoom and go to church without having to talk to anyone. We hope he wants to learn more because he is really interested in our history. He watched a video about Joseph Smith's life and really liked it. I really hope he keeps asking us things and talking to us but he also says he doesn't want to bother us, like, it's our job to talk to you and teach about our church! He also said a few times, "I don't know what it is about this church but I think I should check it out" or something to that effect.
We had zone conference on Thursday and it was good! We met a lot of missionaries. At the very end President Duckworth (mission pres) said we would go around and share testimonies, about 1 min each. He said "we'll start with Sister Smalley"😳 but fortunately I survived. I still get shaky and nervous when I have to talk to groups of people I don't know, but so far teaching lessons have been great. I thought it would be way harder for me but it's actually ok. I am teaching in English so I guess it might be worse when I start speaking Spanish. I'm still doing language study almost every day. We called some Hermanas in our zone and they gave me lots of good advice on how and what to study.
Our Friday restaurant was a Peruvian restaurant called King Pollo. It was quite good and I used my Spanish to order. :)
Halloween was a thing, I guess. Nobody came to our door which was kinda disappointing because we aren't allowed to knock on other peoples doors, Halloween would be the only time where they would come to us. I figured nobody would come, there's not a lot of kids in our apartment; also, trick or treat? more like covid or treat, am I right? My mom sent me lots of candy just in case, so now we have lots of candy. My companion and I were trying to figure out how we could dress up while still wearing missionary clothes and so I was a jungle explorer and she was a black panther (see pic)
We have been going to our YSA ward as well as our family ward on Sunday, both in person, however we had to go back to zoom for YSA because there was a Covid outbreak in the other ward in that building. well I kind of predicted that because the YSAs don't care as much compared to the family ward...
We watched a YSA devotional given by President and Sister Uchtdorf and it was so good, I took like 3 pages of notes.
Exciting news, we have a baptism! Our golden referral Firas committed to be baptized in November, probably the 28th. We still need to teach him the commandments but we think he'll be as great as ever. Sister Harrison and haven't really contributed much to his conversion, but it was a really great moment yesterday when he said he started learning about the church in May, because Sister Harrison said she was in the MTC in May and was praying for the people she would teach to be prepared to learn. It was him! She was praying for him, and didn't even know it.
It's been getting colder lately and I think we'll go somewhere but we might not. I don't know if I'll have cool p day pictures next week but that's ok.
Nothing else really. I love being a missionary! We are teaching so many great people!
Happy a good Monday,
Hermana/Sister Smalley
