In which we receive a creepy bunny statue and become addicted to Red Hots
Hello everyone! This week was great.
Last Monday I moved into the new apartment with Sister Harrison. We also had Sister Wilson staying with us until she went home on Wednesday, so of course we did a lot of fun stuff and went to a few restaurants and places.
Tuesday was our busiest day. We went to the mission home in Burke, Virginia, for Sister Wilson's exit interview. We were so amazed to see all the trees. We basically drove through a forest to get there. We got to see quite a few other sister missionaries also doing exit interviews, and it was fun to see them in person.
After that we went and got smoothies and went back home to teach people. We drove to old town Alexandria and got sandwiches at this place called Potbellies (so delicious 😛😛) then we walked to an ice cream place called Kilwins (they have a special flavor called Potomac river mud) then we sat out by the Potomac and chilled out while we ate.
We're pretty restricted on in-person activities. Basically we can only go in person to church, district council, and approved service opportunities. We call a lot of people on the phone and video call a lot. Members aren't allowed to give us food at all, not even drop it off, so that means we're cooking a lot. I'm way better at cooking than I thought I was! It's exciting. We found a whole bag of lemons that the previous missionaries left, so we made lemon bars for the elders who dropped off mail to us.

On Wednesday Sister Wilson had to leave at 5:45 so unfortunately that meant we had to get up with her. It was ok though. We had technical difficulties all day. Our connection was terrible. We had to reschedule 2 lessons and missed most of new missionary training. In the middle of our last meeting, we said a prayer that our connection could get better. It worked! Then about 15 minutes later our phone kept dying and wouldn't charge. Fortunately that was the only day that happened.
We had a few service opportunities this week. We served at the food redistribution center, sorting through old food to see if people who need it could still eat it.
My favorite service is when we serve at Habitat for Humanity ReStore which is like DI for furniture and houseware. We sort and organize things, move couches and big heavy things for people, and my favorite job: smashing furniture that doesn't sell. I sent a picture last week but didn't really explain. We have to put on safety glasses and we use sledgehammers and axes to break dressers, chairs, and shelves up to throw away. It's fun.
Last week our friend Sonny that we serve with at Restore gave Sister Wilson a present because she was leaving. It is a ceramic bunny that is kind of creepy. We're keeping it with us because she didn't have room in her bag (or she didn't want it) so yeah. Sonny's super awesome and always walks us to our car and prays with us and asks us to teach him something. We're trying to get him to come to church. We gave him a Book of Mormon and he said he'd read it on his balcony while he drank his nightly beer. 😆
Oh yeah when we moved we were looking in our pantry and found two boxes of Red Hots cinnamon candy and we have been eating it nonstop. Its gotten to the point where when we're calling people one of us talks and the other one eats a Red Hot and we switch off
We've found quite a few new friends this week. It's been really great.
I hate typing all this on a phone.
Have a great week!
Adios,
Hermana/Sister Smalley
